When the lumbar region of the spine becomes affected by pain, it can often result from the discs being herniated or irritated by outside factors or conditions. A discogram can diagnose the cause of your back pain, and if there are signs of damaged spinal discs. At Houston Pain and Spine, we offer these diagnostic for those experiencing disc-related pain

How We Perform Lumbar Discogram

Houston Pain and Spine uses diagnostic procedures to evaluate and identify painful discs in the lumbar spine. Lumbar discograms play a critical role in diagnosing the cause of your back pain.

Lumbar Discogram

A contrast dye is injected into the intervertebral discs along the lumbar spine using fluoroscopic guidance during a lumbar discogram. When injected, the dye helps visualize the internal structures of the discs, allowing our physicians to identify the specific discs causing their pain. When we use lumbar discograms, we use them to diagnose the following spinal conditions:

  • Discogenic Pain: This refers to pain originating from the intervertebral discs themselves. Lumbar discograms can help identify if a specific disc is the source of pain, distinguishing it from other possible causes.
  • Herniated Discs: Lumbar discograms can determine if a herniated disc is responsible for symptoms such as radiating pain, numbness, or tingling in the legs. The procedure can reproduce the patient’s pain by pressurizing the disc, confirming its association with disc pathology.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease: Discograms can assess the integrity and health of the discs. It helps identify degenerative changes, such as disc height loss, disc tears, or disc bulges, contributing to chronic back pain and functional impairment.
  • Disc Tears or Annular Fissures: Discogram findings can reveal tears or fissures in the disc’s outer layer (annulus fibrosus), which may cause pain and instability.
